USS Indianapolis Heavy Battle Cruiser CA-35:
The USS Indianapolis was a Portland class heavy cruiser that served with distinction throughout WWII. She served in the Aleutian campaign, the battles of Saipan, Iwo Jima and Okinawa to name a few. She delivered the atom bomb to the B-29 squadron based on the island of Tinian. On her way back she was attacked by a Japanese submarine just after midnight on July 30, 1945. She was hit by at least two torpedoes and sank within 12 minutes. Of the 1196 crewmen on board, about 300 were killed outright by the attack. The remaining 800+ crewmen went into the water and waited for rescue. Because of the secrecy of their mission, no SOS was sent. The survivors waited for days before being discovered, and by the time they were rescued only 317 survived. Many of the rest were killed by shark attacks, dehydration and salt poisoning. The sinking of the Indianapolis resulted in the worst loss of life at sea in the US Navy's history.
