PT-109 was the WWII Patrol Torpedo boat Captained by John F. Kennedy. This type of PT boat was built by Elco, and at 80 feet in length, they were the largest Patrol boat built during WWII. Elco PT-boats had 2" thick mahogany wood hulls. They were powered by three Packard V-12 engines, giving them a top speed of over 40 knots! Elco PT-boats were heavily armed with torpedos, cannons and machine guns, giving them the ability to sink a ship as large as a battleship!
PT-109 and its crew were run down and cut in half by the Japanese Destroyer 'Amagiri' on the night of August 2, 1943. In the ensuing struggle for survival, Lt. Commander John F. Kennedy helped to rescue his crew at great personal risk by swimming long distances through shark infested enemy waters.
