Gibeon Meteorites

Iron meteorites are composed primarily of various alloys of iron and nickel, and are derived from planetary cores that were broken apart billions of years ago by catastrophic impact events. The crystalline patterns within Meteorites are known as "WidmanstŠtten" patterns after the Austrian Count Alois von WidmanstŠtten who first discovered these patterns in 1808. These patterns are formed of interwoven bands of kamacite and taenite, and can only form over literally millions of years of cooling. It has been estimated that it took about 1000 years for these molten pieces of planetary core to cool by just 1 degree celsius! The beautiful crystalline patterns characteristic of iron meteorites are more than just beautiful oddities-they tell us how long it took for the planetary core from which the meteorite is derived to cool!

NEW! We have both standard etched Gibeons (around 4mm thick) and extremely thin etched Gibeons (~1mm) thick. In fact, compared to a typical 4mm thick slice, a 1mm slice of the same weight has four times more display area! It is very expensive to cut meteorites so thin, and a lot of material is lost in the process, but the results speak for themselves. When moved in the light these slices look like holographic pieces of Modern Abstract Art!!! The price for these extra thin slices is more per gram than for the thick slices, but when you consider how much display surface you get, it is a bargain! We have just added these beautifully etched Gibeon meteorites to our website. We also have rough sawn Gibeon Slabs for knife making. If you need raw Gibeon material for knife or jewelry making contact us. The following etched specimens are currently available (click on the blue links below for larger photos and prices):
